Gold Star Reivews are almost all 5 out of 5 Stars!

“This is one of my favorite films of all time so to say I know every line is an understatement. However, this version was so charming and funny that I didn’t mind the changes. And ERIC BAYS is amazing as Paul. I think the whole audience fell in love with him. Great work!”

“Second time I ‘ve seen BITP and it was even funnier this time. Eric Bays was great again and I was able to catch more of his throwaway gems. Great way to spend a dreary, rainy Sunday afternoon. I plan on seeing it again.”

“Friendly, intimmate and small theater where you could almost feel a part of what is happening on stage. Like you’ve joined the party. Actors stayed true to their roles and were believable. Loved Eric Bays’ performance.”

“I love this play and I love these actors. This is the perfect play for you to take your boyfriend, your girlfriend, or just a friend, who is not really into theatre. It is fun, funny, witty, and so much more!”

“Great play, great theater and superb acting. I loved the character and the story: light but smart, with non contrived ending. Highly recommended for couple of all ages. Theater is BYOB (or rather bring your own wine) which is very nice of them. The place is very simple and intimate, yet does not feel cramped. We were sitting in the “first row” and it was a joy. Will come back for sure for future plays.”

“A fun, inexpensive night out. Need to frequent the theater more.”

Book of Liz Highly Recommended

September 14th, 2010

The Chicago Reader Highly Recommends The Book of Liz:

The Sedaris siblings’ off-kilter script unleashes its weirdness at a blazing pace, but Angie McMahon’s superb cast parlays the inanity into tight, hilarious scenes and endearingly eccentric characters. Sarah Rose Graber plays the unlikely heroine with pinched, quirky charm.

Review of Book of Liz

September 13th, 2010

Four stars says ChicagoTheaterBlog:

Graber deserves all the praise she can get for her wide-eyed portrayal of Liz. She is unwavering in her commitment to the character’s little tics, from her squeaky voice to her “Gosh darn” facial expressions. Equally worthy of praise is her supporting cast, including Kash, who did double duty by filling in for Bryan Beckwith, the actor slated to play restaurant manager Duncan. As Brother Brightbee, Kash’s hyperbolized passive aggression toward Liz makes for some tense comedy. Adam El-Sharkawi, too, does an outstanding job as Reverend Tollhouse, the Squeamish community’s no-nonsense leader. In one of the play’s only dramatic scenes, Liz confronts the Reverend about his workhorse ways. Here, Graber and El-Sharkawi forge a genuinely touching connection in the midst of the otherwise hair-brained comedy.

Angie McMahon’s direction is resourceful. Chemically Imbalanced Comedy’s space is tight—incredibly tight. And yet she manages to swiftly transform the stage from a parish to a restaurant to a doctor’s office without letting the momentum of the play slow for a moment.

A Message from Sean

September 7th, 2010

My name is Sean Keith and I’ve been a company member at CIC for over two years and I perform with the house team, Counter-Productive Lover. This Sunday, I will be participating in the Kidney Walk in Milwaukee. It’s an event to raise money for The National Kidney Foundation. This organization is very close to me. Since I was 15, I’ve had a kidney disease that has eventually caused my kidneys to fail late last year. But back in February, I was grateful to be the recipient of a kidney from my cousin, Julie. Because of her, I’m able to enjoy life. The cost for Julie’s portion of the procedure cost over $40,000. That’s a step price and impossible to pay. However, The National Kidney Foundation took care of all of her cost. If you have a couple of bucks and are feeling generous, please click on the Kidney Walk link.

Congrats to Vanessa Bayer for SNL!

August 30th, 2010

Big congrats goes out to CIC’s friend Vanessa Bayer (pictured performing at Snubfest) for recently getting cast as a featured Player on Saturday Night Live. Vanessa performed regularly in our Saturday Night Showcase with improv group Cyclops Baby and would often host our showcase as well. We couldn’t be more thrilled for you!

15 Chicago Theatres Catch Chase Cash

July 21st, 2010

The Second Chase Community Giving challenge is over and 15 Chicago theatres have pulled down $20,000 a piece, giving Chicago Theatre $300,000 of the $5 million total purse.

“It was a great community effort and everyone pulled together to make this happen,” said Lindsay Muscato, managing director for The Neo-Futurists , which came in 111th on the 200 charity list (and fourth among Chicago theatres).

“There was a lot of teamwork, a lot of vote trading, and a lot of supporting one another,” said Amanda Farrar, executive director of Barrel of Monkeys , which finished 139th.

This contrasts with the last round, which ended in January with two Chicago Theatres—Sideshow and New Colony—getting $25,000 a piece. Those theatres did it totally on their own. But when the next round came along, many small theatres had their network in place.
