reviews from Goldstarevents.com

For the cost, this is a great event. Overall, it’s a good event. It personally doesn’t bother me, but be prepared that this is a tiny venue and very homespun. I very much appreciate that it’s a collective group of improv artists who are just trying to share their love and talent with everyone. You’re really there for the words….

…Roboctopus was distinctively better than the first group. They definitely had my friends and I laughing. The topic was babies balls, and that started off their skit hysterically discussion circumcisions. We really liked them and definitely would like to see them again.

The last group was Cyclops Baby, and it was obvious why they were the closers. There was barely a second that they were performing that we weren’t laughing. The situation thrown out was Cirque du Soleil at McDonald’s, which ended up being hysterical. Their “interpretive” acting was just as funny as their verbal discourse. They were fantastic, and I look forward to seeing them again!

Small sidenote — the bathroom is cool as hell. The walls are wallpapered with the pages out of plays and musicals. It’s very creative and super cool.

Overall, the experience was definitely worth it and funny. It’s easy to get to from public transportation, and it’s BYOB! We didn’t know that before hand but wish we had!

Reviews from Goldstarevents.com from May 24th’s Showcase featuring Cave of Hobans, Roboctopus, 21st Century Men):

This was the best improv I’ve seen in a long time, better then anything at any of the other improv theaters. All 3 groups were great, especially Roboctopus and 21st Century Men. Plus, you can BYOB at this theater and that makes for a fun cheap night! I will for sure be back!- 4 stars

Here’s what Gaper’s Block had to say about Cartoon:

Check out “Cartoon” at Chemically Imbalanced Comedy

CartoonPoster.jpgChemically Imbalanced Comedy’s latest production, Cartoon, runs about an hour long, which seems too short to showcase all of the talent in its young cast. There is a rich cast of performers, but author Steve Yockey’s busy script fails to deliver sufficient opportunities for the players to showcase their stuff. He comes close with his development of the character Winston, but he is helped greatly by the endearing but oh-so-sad performance of Chris Froseth. It’s also hard to take your eyes off of Brian Kash as the mischevious instigator Trouble, who commands the stage anytime he enters a scene. Another standout is Leslie Nesbit, whose anime girl Yumi is as vulnerable as she is tough as she is funny.

Though the stage is small for a cast of eight, director Angie McMahon and combat choreographer Elizabeth Styles never overwhelm the audience. McMahon is skilled at creating stage pictures that add subtext to what’s going on, and Styles staged an epic anime battle that was fast and funny without overpowering the intimate performance space. Composer Jay Gish provides some catchy tunes, as well as designing some delightfully crude stage projections. Steve Yockey’s script reads like an odd cross between Mao’s Little Red Book and Toy Story, which is amusing at times and confusing at others. The author has created the foundation for some very dynamic characters, and perhaps he would benefit from further fleshing them out instead of chasing the plot.

Cartoon is running through May 10th at Chemically Imbalanced Comedy (1420 W. Irving Park). You can find their performance schedule and order tickets through their website.

Review for CIC’s new production Cartoon from the Reader:

Set in a bizarre kingdom that looks like a cartoon but functions as a police state, Steve Yockey’s hallucinatory comedy charts the chaos that ensues when the inhabitants of the realm get a taste of freedom. Things are usually run, despotically, by an awful little girl (a kind of Ubu Roi in pigtails), but when a cowboy named Trouble absconds with her gigantic hammer, she can no longer maintain order. For her subjects–including a sad-sack puppet, a lovesick clown, and two boy-crazy schoolgirls–liberty means euphoria, uncertainty, and finally violence. Yockey’s script can be crude and muddled, but it’s not dull. And Angie McMahon’s madcap production for Chemically Imbalanced Comedy benefits from some lovely, bleak ballads by Jay Gish, as well as a cast that goes for broke. –Zac Thompson

And one comment found on the Reader’s events page:

Hilarious! The actress playing the evil little girl in charge of Cartoonland is deliciously twisted! 4 stars

Steering you right since just the other night
Funny characters played by skilled performers who go beyond relying solely upon easy stereotypes to find “the funny” in a scene.

Centerstage Show Review

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Reviewer: Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

“Whoever said pimpin’ ain’t easy don’t know what the hell they doin’,” announces a pimp as he adjusts his fur stole at the beginning of his scene. It’s a highly relevant point that touches on the broad images of pimps that fill popular culture. This statement also sums up the experience of “Pimprov,” the ridiculously absurd improv show that skewers dumb media caricatures with merciless wit. If you want gratuitous humor laced with sharp social-political observations, this is the show.If you want silly portraits of pimps in polyester pants and bling-covered chests, this is the show. If you want to see keenly executed improv, this is the show. Pimprov offers all of these elements because the show’s actors really know what they hell they’re doing.

The show’s premise involves four pimps who decide to take improv classes at Second City. Improvisational theater boasts strong Chicago roots, with local troupes the Compass Players and then Second City helping to popularize the form. However, with Chicago roots also comes the tendency for racial segregation; improv in general and Second City in particular are known as white male bastions. So the show’s premise, as well as the fact that all of the African-American performers have improv training, lends itself to tons of comic and political possibilities.

Stomping through clouds of smoke with hip-hop pumping and synthetic fabric blazing, the guys of Pimprov do not disappoint. The sight gags alone are worth the price of admission. There’s the Internet Pimp (Skippa Hickson) or IP for short, in crushed red velvet PJs, a white bathrobe and a Blackberry that quickly loses power. Ho Lease (Mark Bratton) sports plaid wool knickers with matching vest and newsboy hat. Pimpin’ Poochie (Keith Smitherman) wears ankle-skimming white polyester pants, a ratty afro wig and tattered fur coat and Grand Finale (Marz Timms) dons a rakishly tipped white fur hat with a sparkling black-and-silver shirt that’s open to reveal a diamond-encrusted chain. Fortunately, that’s just the beginning. The actors quickly move into a dizzying array of improv sketches, including a Chinese delivery man who insults them by asking about the Cubs, to a white man who demands white eggs for breakfast because, well, he is white.

The finale involves the cast pulling an audience member onto the stage and re-enacting his or her day. At this particular show, the audience member happened to be a Brazilian woman who got lost in Mundelein and brought along her boyfriend, who just happened to resemble a serial killer. The details for this scene are fuzzy because the howls of laughter obscured most of the lines and streaming tears blurred a lot of the action. Suffice it to say, it was funny.

Pimprov is a must-see show. The tiny storefront literally shakes with laughter. Each performance gives proceeds to a battered woman’s shelter and the level of improv skill makes the show a significant addition to a Chicago tradition.
