The ComedySportz Theatre Invites Friends To Play On Stage For A Special Chicago Comedy Theater Challenge.

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

The ComedySportz Theatre celebrates their copper anniversary by inviting neighboring comedy theaters to get on stage and play in their main stage show “ComedySportz.” “This is the third time we’ve hosted the Chicago Comedy Theater Challenge,” says Managing Director Greg Werstler. “The Challenge shows were so fun that we made them our anniversary weekend event this year.” Comedy theaters scheduled to appear are iO, pH Productions, Chemically Imbalanced Comedy and The Playground. “Every theater has loyal fans and they come out to laugh and cheer their ensemble members on,” adds Werstler. “There’s a real positive and funny vibe in our space every time we host Chicago Comedy Theater Challenge.”

CIC is sending three of our best short form performers. Sean Keith, Mike Johnson, and Eric Bays. They will go head to head with ComedySportz home team as they battle for bragging rights.

CIC Season Ticket Holders are entitled to $100 off a class - 50% off (any level) at ComedySportz. When you purchase your CIC Season Ticket you will get the coupon code to use at ComedySportz.

Term 1 begins January 11

Level 101: Fundamentals of Improv (Never been on stage before? Here’s your class!)
We focus on the basic skills of improvisation: team-building, trust, speed, status, active listening, and agreement. Whether you want to be funnier on stage, or be a more effective communicator, listener, and leader off stage — you should always start with the Fundamentals!

Level 202: Scenic Improvisation (Have you taken improv classes before? This might be your class!)
Focus now on character and more advanced scene improvisation. Begin to live on stage through object and environment work. Learn to raise the stakes of otherwise ordinary relationships by exploring yourself and the scene.

Level 404: Styles and Genre (If you have taken Level 303, this is your class! Advanced Placement Available)
The best kept secret in Chicago: how to effectively use genre in performance. Genre parody is common in sketch comedy, but often avoided in performance improvisation - except at ComedySportz! 404 focuses on those ComedySportz games that heavily employ genres and style work, and gives students the opportunity to gain mastery in one of the more difficult areas of the artform.

Level 505: Music Improv (The next tool in your box if you’ve completed Level 404! Advanced Placement Available)
Much of the magic of a ComedySportz show is found in our performers ability to do improvised singing. In this class you’ll learn the skills needed to sing to music you’ve never heard before, the elements of a successful improvised song, and ComedySportz’s current repertoire of musical games.

Limited space still available! Call Trish Vignola, Training Center Manager at 773-549-8080 (x230) for details. When you purchase your CIC Season Ticket you will get a coupon code to use for your discount at ComedySportz Training Center.

Congrats to ComedySportz!

So last night my Husband Tom and I went to go see the brand new ComedySportz Chicago space. It was really beautiful. I have only seen three ComedySportz shows ever. And strangely enough two of them were opening nights of new spaces for them.

So I have seen the last three spaces ComedySportz has been in. This by far is the most beautiful. They have shiny fancy flat screen TV’s that serve as the score board as well as show video bits (insiders tip I heard these we purchased from the Improv Kitchen :)

They also have a nice bar with friendly staff and a liquor license (am I jealous, a little).

But I have to say as far as reception goes I was under whelmed. Now it can’t be easy working from scratch and building up a space for two years. AND having almost a whole week of openings (a press open, a industry open, a company open, a public open) I get it.

But this was your opening night (at least one of them) and at the end of the night the reception (sponsored by Chipotle) was literally someone walking up to our table dropping off a bag of chips and a small plastic cup of guacamole and saying “Enjoy”. Was the guac and chips tasty? Yes. Did this fulfill my hopes and dreams of a reception? No. If Matt would have told me I could have made a cold pasta salad (very cheap to make costs about $10 feeds approx 45 people). The offer is out for your next reception.

But overall the show was fun, the space is lovely, and I know they will have a long healthy life in this location.

On the walk home my husband and I saw a man in nothing but his underwear taking money out of the ATM machine at the Bank of America on the corner.

HA!
