Cartoon closes this weekend. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely come out.
Also, CIC is forced to say farewell (or a really lengthy see ya later) to a dear friend and company member.

Laurel Schroeder is leaving Chicago to explore for a bit. She may be back, she may not. Her final performance of Cartoon is THIS Friday! Not Sunday, not even Saturday, but Friday! Come see what may be her final show at CIC…at least for awhile. Right, Laurel?
On behalf of Chemically Imbalanced Comedy I would like to wish Laurel and Freddie the best of luck on their new adventure.
Here is a clip for CIC’s show Cartoon currently running till May 10.
Here’s what Gaper’s Block had to say about Cartoon:
Chemically Imbalanced Comedy’s latest production, Cartoon, runs about an hour long, which seems too short to showcase all of the talent in its young cast. There is a rich cast of performers, but author Steve Yockey’s busy script fails to deliver sufficient opportunities for the players to showcase their stuff. He comes close with his development of the character Winston, but he is helped greatly by the endearing but oh-so-sad performance of Chris Froseth. It’s also hard to take your eyes off of Brian Kash as the mischevious instigator Trouble, who commands the stage anytime he enters a scene. Another standout is Leslie Nesbit, whose anime girl Yumi is as vulnerable as she is tough as she is funny.
Though the stage is small for a cast of eight, director Angie McMahon and combat choreographer Elizabeth Styles never overwhelm the audience. McMahon is skilled at creating stage pictures that add subtext to what’s going on, and Styles staged an epic anime battle that was fast and funny without overpowering the intimate performance space. Composer Jay Gish provides some catchy tunes, as well as designing some delightfully crude stage projections. Steve Yockey’s script reads like an odd cross between Mao’s Little Red Book and Toy Story, which is amusing at times and confusing at others. The author has created the foundation for some very dynamic characters, and perhaps he would benefit from further fleshing them out instead of chasing the plot.
Cartoon is running through May 10th at Chemically Imbalanced Comedy (1420 W. Irving Park). You can find their performance schedule and order tickets through their website.

Review for CIC’s new production Cartoon from the Reader:
Set in a bizarre kingdom that looks like a cartoon but functions as a police state, Steve Yockey’s hallucinatory comedy charts the chaos that ensues when the inhabitants of the realm get a taste of freedom. Things are usually run, despotically, by an awful little girl (a kind of Ubu Roi in pigtails), but when a cowboy named Trouble absconds with her gigantic hammer, she can no longer maintain order. For her subjects–including a sad-sack puppet, a lovesick clown, and two boy-crazy schoolgirls–liberty means euphoria, uncertainty, and finally violence. Yockey’s script can be crude and muddled, but it’s not dull. And Angie McMahon’s madcap production for Chemically Imbalanced Comedy benefits from some lovely, bleak ballads by Jay Gish, as well as a cast that goes for broke. –Zac Thompson
And one comment found on the Reader’s events page:
Hilarious! The actress playing the evil little girl in charge of Cartoonland is deliciously twisted! 4 stars

If you pass through our theater within the next five weeks, you may catch a hint of peanut butter aroma in the air. That isn’t our new air freshener, but rather the smell of our stage blood. Yummy. The delicious (and perfectly oozy) recipe was cooked up by our very own Nate Petts. He worked hard on it so come out and get sprayed with it, will you?
Tech week is trucking along, and it’s almost time to open. Though the technical aspects have not been as tedious or hellacious for the actors, if you see Angie, Sarah, or any other member of our technical crew around this week, you should give them a huge hug, a massage, a kiss on the cheek, a wad of money, and buy them a sandwich and many beers. They’ve been slaving for this production morning, noon, and night for a solid week and their hard work really shows.
Here’s a big kudos to those guys. I speak on behalf of the rest of the cast when I say that we really, really appreciate it! Much love! We’re almost there, guys!
Cartoon opens this Friday, April 3 and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until May 10.
