Review for CIC’s new production Cartoon from the Reader:

Set in a bizarre kingdom that looks like a cartoon but functions as a police state, Steve Yockey’s hallucinatory comedy charts the chaos that ensues when the inhabitants of the realm get a taste of freedom. Things are usually run, despotically, by an awful little girl (a kind of Ubu Roi in pigtails), but when a cowboy named Trouble absconds with her gigantic hammer, she can no longer maintain order. For her subjects–including a sad-sack puppet, a lovesick clown, and two boy-crazy schoolgirls–liberty means euphoria, uncertainty, and finally violence. Yockey’s script can be crude and muddled, but it’s not dull. And Angie McMahon’s madcap production for Chemically Imbalanced Comedy benefits from some lovely, bleak ballads by Jay Gish, as well as a cast that goes for broke. –Zac Thompson

And one comment found on the Reader’s events page:

Hilarious! The actress playing the evil little girl in charge of Cartoonland is deliciously twisted! 4 stars
