Finger Licking Casting

By Angie McMahon

So recently I had an audition for the Oxygen Network Reality TV show Shelarious. They liked me a little so they had me make a video for them but I didn’t make it to final callbacks. After that I didn’t think my agent would call me again for a long time. See I had a hellofatime getting an agent to begin with. This agent said she would rep me and at first called me a lot for mostly commercial auditions. But you see I have never made it to a callback for anything on television. So soon my picture came off of her website. I asked her about it and she said they were just making room for newer people and that she was still rep’ing me. The calls became once ever 6 months for commercial work. And I never sealed the deal for her. Then one day this past June she calls me and says she booked me to do an industrial site unseen and that it was an AFTRA gig. I did the gig and it was great, the client was very happy and I thought the calls would stream in again.

Nothing.

I was the one who saw the audition for Shelarious and called her about it. After once again not making it to the next level for her I thought for sure I wouldn’t hear from her again for 6 months. But low and behold I got a call yesterday for a KFC commercial audition. Knowing my track record I expect nothing will come of it. But I was glad she called.

See what I have found out about these auditions is that they have nothing to do with talent. They have to do with Marketing. It all comes down to a look. Would I buy chicken from this person. Would they make me remember this brand the next time I am in the market for chicken. Will I talk about this commercial and how funny or memorable it was with my friends at the office.

The more an actor gets booked on auditions for commercials the more they are sent out. Because (much like TV and Movies) they are proven to sell something specific. They have that salesman quality that makes me want to buy something. So said agent focus more on the talent that gets booked more and more because said agent does not get paid if the talent they rep does not get booked.

The frustrating thing is there is nothing I can do about this. There is nothing I can change about myself to make myself more sellable. I am the package God made me and short of trying to alter it with surgery and tanning salons there is not much to be done.

So it is a good thing that I got called again, but I fully expect not to hear from her till Sept.

I will keep you all updated on the developments.

BTW just an update, I didn’t get the commercial, and once again did not get called back.

I went the commercial audition route for awhile – had multiple agents and ended up discovering that I had “too much energy for TV” which was either A) true or B) meant I look unsavory on camera.

I got sent out for some completely inappropriate castings (that Boston Market campaign with the drumming? I don’t play effing drums but because I play trumpet and theremin, what the hell, right?) and finally stopped worrying about it.

I do make a great Chicago cop, though.
